Footsteps in the Snow

A Stroll

Bucolic landscape linen white, alluring and serene

Crisp blue sky watching o’er this lovely postcard scene

Tiny pond there in the park, where barefoot summers spent

Echo of a winter raven signal its intent

*

Set there in the land of love, where cares are far away

Passing time there, as they do, on this winter’s day

Laughter and a child’s delight – merriment abounds

Distractions from what’s lurking near, on this hallowed ground

**

A blink,

A sigh,

A squinting smile up to the sky…

Then over to the pond

Curiosity beckons toward what’s beyond

***

A score of footsteps from the last, a ballerina twirl

Mark the dimming of a light, and a little girl

  1. I wrote this poem after reading the story of a 4 year old girl from Loveland, CO who died when she fell through the ice.

The stark picture of her footsteps in the snow was devastating.

My sympathies go out to her family.
